What is Tufting?
Tufting is a textile technique that allows you to create rugs quickly and precisely using a tufting gun, either manual or electric. The yarn is literally “shot” through a base fabric, shaping unique patterns and textures.
How it works
The machine inserts the yarn into the fabric with the help of a needle. There are two main variants:
- Cut pile: the yarn is cut immediately after insertion, creating a velvet or carpet effect.
- Loop pile: the yarn remains in a loop, resulting in an embroidered or boucle-like effect.
Some models, like the AK DUO, allow switching between the two modes with a simple mechanical gesture.
Why it has become popular
In recent years, tufting has spread among artists, designers, and creatives thanks to:
- Maximum creative freedom
- A fast and accessible process, even for beginners
- The ability to create rugs, mirrors, panels, bags, and much more
What you need to get started
To begin, you will need some basic tools:
- Tufting gun (loop, cut, or DUO)
- Primary fabric
- Secondary fabric and glue
- Acrylic yarn, wool, or blends
- Frame with grip
- Scissors, combs, and spray glue for finishing
Practical tips
