Are you starting with the Tufting Technique, but don't know which type of yarn to use? Don't worry, this article is meant for you. We will guide you so that you can start making your designs with the right yarn. With each Tufting creation, we encourage you to ask yourself the following questions:
"What purpose will my creation be used for once it's finished? How strong does my pile work need to be?" As you will have understood, the choice of your yarn will depend on the use of your creation.
There are many types of yarn, some have advantages and some disadvantages. Today we will highlight two very popular categories:
ACRYLIC and WOOL
✔️ Wool: If your rug is intended to be placed on the floor, we recommend avoiding acrylic and instead opt for the wool. In fact, carpets found on the market are generally made with this natural and resistant fiber that will retain its shape even after repeated passages.
✔️ Acrylic: If, on the other hand, you want to make a wall piece or even a rug that won't be walked on often, you can use acrylic yarn. Its main disadvantage is that it will not stand the test of time when used for floor pieces. It tends to fray easily, but if you are new to Tufting Technique, this synthetic fiber is a good option for you at a lower cost.
Now that you know which yarn to choose, let's talk about the thickness of the yarn you should use for the Tufting Technique. We can easily lose our bearings when faced with all the yarn thickness sizes available in stores. However, the thickness ultimately doesn't matter as long as you can fit it through the eye of your Tufting Gun. You can purchase acrylic yarns specially made for the practice of the Tufting Technique which you can find here
Depending on the thickness of your yarn, you can insert 2 to 4 threads into the eye of the weaving gun. This will give you better results and allow you to obtain a creation with depth and a good density of material. To find the best formula, we recommend testing with different types of yarns before starting to weave your pattern.
Now you are ready for the Tufting Technique!
All you need to do is insert the yarn into your gun for the Tufting Technique. The best way to feed yarn into your gun is to use a yarn feeder. This accessory is one of the essential elements for good practice of the Tufting Technique. When you start practicing the Tufting Technique the thread will run away from your machine several times, the thread passer can avoid nervous moments.
Finally, if you choose to purchase balls of yarn, we highly recommend using a winder. This will save you the frustration of how many times the yarn will come out of your Tufting Gun. You have the choice between an electric winder or a manual .
Happy tufting! 😀
